Fifty Shades of Grisaille

Date:
02/23/2018 - 3:00pm - 6:00pm
Location:
Cooperative Gallery 213 State St Binghamton

There will be an extra exhibit in February at the Cooperative Gallery. The Members' Gallery this month will have the theme "Fifty Shades of Grisaiile." French for "grey", all the works will be in tones of grey, usually painting or drawing but also in black and white photography. "Exhibiting members challenge themselves from time to time to work on a theme," said Judy Salton. This Grisaille exhibit joins Nancy Ryan's "Collection" of illustrations of a range of objects, and Martha Colgan's "Treelove", paintings of trees. All shows run through Feb. 24th and is open Fridays 3-6 pm and Saturdays 12-4 pm and by appointment.

What better than the grey month of Feb. 2018 for our "Grisaille" members show - photos / prints / drawings / collages / paintings, all in shades of grey. Grisaille came into popularity during the Renaissance when it was used for the basic painting with layers of colored glazes applied over the greys to attain the final colored version. It was also used for studies, sketches, etc. and used to portray statuary. This technique continued until the 1800s, when "alla prima" painting (using color directly from tube to canvas) gained popularity and was used mainly by the Impressionists.
